Wilderness Emergency Care

NHSI has developed Wilderness First Aid courses to meet various provider needs.

  • Camp Directors & Personnel
  • Scout Troop Leaders
  • Outdoor Adventurers & Leaders
  • Park Rangers
  • Ski Patrol Members
  • EMTs

Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness Emergency Care are programs that train people to cope with hazards and emergencies in remote areas. Skills are expanded from basic urban / suburban first aid due to the extended care time before EMS arrives.

The Basic Course is a full day (up to 8 hour) program that gives the participant classroom and hands-on experience in basic care. Topics covered include:
  • Environmental Hazards (heat, cold, altitude, lightning, sunburn)
  • Wound & Burn Care
  • Biological Hazards (water, bugs, snakes, bears, plants)
  • Bone & Joint Injuries
  • Trauma Emergencies
  • Medical Emergencies

The Wilderness First Aid Course is a two day (up to 16 hour) program that gives the participant in depth classroom and hands-on experience. Topics covered include:

  • Wound Care, Bleeding Control, Infection Control, Burn Care
  • Biological Hazards (water, bugs, snakes, bears, plants)
  • Bone & Joint Injuries (handling, aligning, transporting)
  • Trauma Emergencies (specific injury care)
  • Medical Emergencies (specific illness care)
  • Thermoregulation (heat & cold care)
  • Altitude Illness, Lightning Strike, Sun Exposure & Protection
